What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition more than 122 million Americans experience. The three most common types of diabetes are type 1, type 2, and gestational. Diabetes is diagnosed when your blood glucose levels, also known as blood sugar, are too high. To convert glucose to energy, your body needs a hormone called insulin. When you have diabetes, your body does not produce or use insulin well. Without enough insulin, there is a build up of glucose in the blood, which leads to high blood sugar.
