Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that most often occurs in children but can be diagnosed in adults. 13% of men and 4.2% of women will be diagnosed throughout their lifetime. ADHD may cause trouble concentrating, controlling impulsive behaviors, or completing tasks.
Adults with ADHD present symptoms differently than children. For example, adults may:
• Have trouble concentrating and not show attention to detail
• Be disorganized and frequently misplace items
• Demonstrate poor time-management skills and be consistently late
ADHD can also cause:
• Depression and anxiety
• Impulsiveness
• Anger management issues
• Mood swings
• Problems at work or school
• Low motivation
You may have heard ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder) referred to as ADD (attention-deficit disorder) before. There is no difference between the two – they’re actually the same thing. ADD is the outdated term for what the medical community now calls ADHD. Some people may still use the term ADD to describe a type of ADHD known as inattentive ADHD.
Testing for ADHD is not as simple as taking an online test or quiz, as some websites may lead you to believe. Our dedicated team of behavioral specialists at Total Behavioral will spend the time needed to evaluate and properly diagnose you or your child thoroughly.
